Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo declares victory in her reelection bid as municipal elections postponed by the coronavirus crisis have seen a strong breakthrough from the Greens across the country.
With almost all districts having reported, the ruling centre-left Social Democrats and Greens and their Left Party parliamentary allies had 40.6 percent of the vote, while the opposition centre-right Alliance were at 40.3 percent.
The ruling Social Democrats and Greens, and their parliamentary ally the Left Party, are backed by 39.5 percent. The other bloc, centre-right Alliance coalition, that defined Swedish politics for a decade trails close behind on 38.5 percent.
Chancellor Angela Merkel says she will meet the German president to inform him that she has failed to form a coalition government with the Greens and the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP).
