The Central Election Commission says Kassym-Jomart Tokayev won nearly 71 percent of the vote with all the ballots counted. The results have not yet been formally confirmed.
Kazakhstan's leader for the past thirty years has voluntarily left the presidency, a first in the region.
"I have taken the decision to refuse the mandate of the presidency," Nazarbayev said in a televised address announcing his decision to step down as Kazak president after three decades in office.
