Ethiopian long-distance runner Lelisa Desisa has won the New York City Marathon for the first time. Desisa had finished second in 2014 and third in 2015 and 2017. Kenya’s Mary Keitany claimed her fourth crown.
The feat by Eliud Kipchoge is the largest single improvement on the marathon world record since Derek Clayton improved the mark by 2:23 in 1967.
They are aspiring ultra-marathon runners, hoping the sport will put their remote village on the map and provide the funds needed to rebuild homes destroyed by 2015 earthquake.
