China is facing criticism for taking a gamble on where the rocket will land, risking damage and casualties. Modern rockets can now carry out controlled descents, which China has yet to achieve.
China said most debris from a large rocket expected to plunge back through the atmosphere this weekend would be burned up on re-entry and is highly unlikely to cause any harm.
The spaceship will one day transport astronauts to a space station that China plans to complete by 2022 — and eventually to the Moon. It will have capacity for a crew of six.
