The eye of Typhoon Hagibis made landfall shortly before 1000 GMT in Izu Peninsula, southwest of Tokyo, Japan's Meteorological Agency said.
Eleven people were rescued alive from the rubble, amongst them a baby, rescuers said. Nine homes and a local business were affected by the landslide following days of heavy rain.
Nearly 300 people died after mudslides triggered by floods from heavy rains devastated the southwestern town of Mocoa.
At least 16 people were killed, including nine US soldiers, following heavy rains over the past week in Texas.
