Bashar al Assad’s forces shelled the besieged neighbourhood after Daraa residents rejected the regime’s demands that they, along with armed opposition groups, surrender light weapons.
Clashes between the Syrian rebels and regime forces are reported just days ahead of a planned four-way summit of leaders from Turkey, Russia, France and Germany on Syria in Istanbul on Saturday.
"The (regime) army and its militias have besieged Daraa completely," says opposition spokesman Abu Shaima, adding thousands of people have been encircled in a new regime push.
More patients are expected to arrive at the hospitals as regime forces have intensified air strikes in the opposition-held province.
The eastern part of Aleppo has been besieged by regime forces for months. Now aid agencies fear that thousands of families are at risk of losing their lives.
