One of the world’s longest-serving leaders, Sassou Nguesso, has been in power for an accumulated 36 years, first taking the helm in 1979.
Sassou N'Guesso receives 88.5% of ballots cast while the top opposition candidate, whose death was announced the day after the election, Guy Brice Parfait Kolelas, won 7.8%. The remaining ballots were split among the five other contenders.
President Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo has been in power for 36 years, and is likely to continue his rule despite being challenged by six opponents.
The United Nations is seeking around $20 million in emergency funding to provide humanitarian assistance in the Pool province.
