The visit of a Russian lawmaker to Georgia sparked protests in the country which has long been caught in a political tussle with Moscow.
The war erupted in 2008 when Georgian troops failed to regain control over the Moscow-backed breakaway province of South Ossetia, ending with a France-brokered truce.
The decision comes after Bashar al Assad’s regime recognised the independence of breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
