Out of control Oak Fire near Yosemite National Park grows into one of the biggest blazes of the year in the western US state, forcing thousands of residents to flee, officials say.
It erupted as firefighters made progress against an earlier blaze that burned to the edge of a grove of giant sequoias in the southernmost part of Yosemite park.
There are 17 major fires burning throughout California. In all, they have destroyed hundreds of homes, killed eight people — including four firefighters— and shut down Yosemite National Park.
