TRT World receives special recognition from the Association of International Broadcasters (AIB)

TRT World receives special recognition from the Association of International Broadcasters (AIB) at gala evening in London on 7 November 2018. The network’s Off the Grid documentary was nominated in “human interest” category for its episode Syria Slaughterhouses. Referred as one of the foremost international awards contest for factual productions, the AIBs celebrate success and outstanding achievement.

Off the Grid team gained rare access to men and women who survived years of abuse inside Syria’s prisons, including the infamous Saydnaya, where detainees are caught between torture and death.

“We wanted to give a voice to the ordinary people whose only crime was to ask for an end to the Syrian oppressive regime. We met the forgotten victims of Bashar al-Assad, to put a face on his brutal detention system” says Director-Producer Mouhssine Ennaimi. Ennaimi spent days in Sweden with Omar Al Shogre, who made the journey to Europe after managing to get out.

“We spoke to several women who were beaten and raped, and are struggling to rebuild their lives. They are often abandoned by their husbands and families but yet their resilience is extraordinary. We are proud to have been able to tell their story”, says Alexandra Pauliat, Off the Grid’s Executive Producer.

Off the Grid tells compelling human stories from across the globe, framing them within a bigger picture. The awarded episode “Syria’s slaughterhouses” gives viewers insight into Bashar Al-Assad’s detention system where prisoners not only endure torture, but are also forced to commit crimes.

Fatih Er, TRT World’s Director of News and Programs, said, “We are immensely proud of the Off the Grid documentary series, which won several international awards including AIBs’ recognition. TRT World values human stories. It’s important to cover the suffering of the Syrian people so that the public can make its own opinion”.

The finalists of the 14th Annual AIBs Awards were announced yesterday, 7 November, at LSO St Luke’s honoring the remarkable work and excellence in the international broadcasting industry.
