In 2017, the project ‘Journalism for Juniors’ was launched by TRT World Citizen – the social responsibility arm of Turkey’s public broadcaster TRT - with the slogan of ‘’Inspiring for Positive Change.’’ The project, which has given the opportunity to hundreds of young people to work with and learn from professional journalists, will be presented at a panel organised at the United Nations Headquarters.
In collaboration with the Permanent Mission of Turkey to the United Nations, the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB), the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth and the UNHCR, the panel titled “Forging a Sustainable Future: Empowering Youth and Vulnerable Communities” will bring together speakers from the field of humanitarian aid and development at the United Nations on the 11th of February.
The panel will include UNDP Director Richard Towle, UN Youth Ambassador Jayathma Wickranamayake, Professor Talip Küçükçan, TRT World Research Director Pınar Kandemir and SETA DC Research Director Kılıç Buğra.
The session will discuss how media organisations who are active in digital spaces can help individuals and societies with limited means of self-expression and self-development to make positive contributions to the social development of young people.
‘Journalism for Juniors’, which was awarded with the IBC’s 2019 ‘Social Impact’ award, one of the most prestigious prizes in the media sector, aims to bring together disadvantaged young people through new media and technology. To date, hundreds of young people have been trained in digital media practices through the programme. In collaboration with the Ministry of Education and others such as TIKA and YTB, TRT World Citizen has organised training opportunities in various cities in Turkey and abroad, in locales such as Kabul Afghanistan and Al–Rai in northern Syria.
