On Saturday Istanbul was hit by a blizzard, with some areas of the city receiving up to 40 centimetres of snowfall, almost 16 inches. The harsh winter weather has stopped ferry transportation in the city of 14 million people that straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus strait.
