Has the Ukraine War Ignited Fuel Smuggling in the Balkans?
According to a new report by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime, Western sanctions on Russian oil following the Ukraine war have ignited fuel smuggling in the Balkans. The report reveals, in 2022, police and customs in seven Balkan countries seized more than 3,000 tonnes of illegal fuel valued at 4.7 million dollars. That's almost four times more than in 2021, and the jump coincides with the start of Russia's attack on Ukraine in February last year. Across The Balkans, hosted by Nafisa Latic, is TRT World’s programme that focuses specifically on the issues and fault lines shaping Southeast Europe today.
