Türkiye Launches the 'Aleppo Model' for the Safe Return of Syrian Refugees
The Aleppo model is a comprehensive three-stage plan initiated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and aims for the safe and humane repatriation of Syrian refugees in Turkiye to their homeland. The plan includes sending Syrians to a de-escalation zone in the northwest, which has also been agreed upon by both Damascus and Moscow. The new model also hopes to resolve issues like housing and employment, as businesses along the Turkish-Syrian border will be permitted to establish workplaces in the area.
This comes at a time when the British government has turned to Turkiye to help with its illegal migration issues. The two countries recently signed a deal that involves sharing intelligence and coordinating joint police action against smuggling rings that organise boat journeys across the English channel. Under the deal, Turkish police will establish a new operational centre for a quicker exchange of data to prevent smuggling gangs. The UK has long been in the spotlight over its asylum policies, and illegal migration has been high on its political agenda. And the UK government has announced it will deploy more officers to Turkiye to work on joint operations.
