Major central banks pause interest rate hikes in 2023
It was a busy year for major central banks around the world as they tried to strike a balance between supporting economic growth and preventing inflation risks. The US Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank and the Bank of England all continued to hike borrowing costs at the beginning of 2023, before finally pausing in the second half of the year. As Omer Bakkaloglu reports, the banks are now on track to start cutting interest rates in 2024.
