
Western Mosul is Daesh's last stronghold in Iraq and a new offensive to retake that part of the city is expected to be the Iraqi army's most daunting battle yet. This is the terror group's heartland - where leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi declared a so-called caliphate after they overran the city in 2014. Western Mosul is smaller, but more densely packed, than the East. So far, Iraqi forces say they have gained ground, but this is expected to be a much longer and tougher fight to push Daesh out for good.
