India’s second wave is now the worst COVID-19 surge in the world. The country marks one COVID-19 death every five minutes and has lost over 200,000 people to the virus since the start of the pandemic. So far, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has responded by ordering a social media crackdown on posts critical of the government’s handling of the crisis and on posts calling for his resignation.
