Technocracy: The answer to failing democracies?

Sometimes the politicians you elect leave you annoyed and disappointed. Political disillusionment and voter apathy is on the rise. Democracy watchdog ‘Freedom House’ says 2017 saw a decline in global freedom for the twelfth consecutive year. 71 countries went backwards, more than double those that made any democratic gains. Proponents of a technocratic system say a society managed by experts would be more rational and productive. Is it time for MPs to let the experts take over? Can we be ruled by technocrats? And do they really know best? Joining us at the Roundtable is Nazry Bahrawi, from Singapore’s University of Technology and Design; Michael Barr a specialist in Singapore politics at Flinders University in Adelaide; Kai Spiekermann is from the Department of Government at the London School of Economics; and Enea Desideri is a research analyst at Open Europe. Roundtable is a discussion programme with an edge. Broadcast out of London and presented by David Foster, it's about bringing people to the table, listening to every opinion, and analysing every point of view. From fierce debate to reflective thinking, Roundtable discussions offer a different perspective on the issues that matter to you. Watch it every weekday at 15:30 GMT on TRT World.
