The Newsmakers: Rise and Fall of Chavismo

Hugo Chavez was a man who some saw as a deity. A paratrooper who became president. He ignited a popular movement that still burns brightly to this day. He inspired a people and polarised a nation. To his followers, he was a hero who empowered the poor and stood up to the United States and his arch enemy George Bush. To his detractors, he was a dictator who jailed opponents, sponsored terrorists and left his people hungry. As Venezuela prepared to go to the polls, Sandra Gathmann followed the legacy of the former Venezuelan President in a journey through Caracas, one of the most dangerous cities in the world.
