What’s behind the war in Sudan and how can it be stopped?

In April 2019, Sudanese hopes soared as three decades of autocratic rule ended with the ousting of Omar al Bashir, paving the way for democratic elections. However, by April 2023, those hopes were shattered as a power struggle between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese army erupted into civil war. This conflict left parts of Khartoum in ruins, triggered the world's largest refugee crisis, and plunged half the population into food insecurity.
