Human rights groups say women in Syrian prisons are being systematically raped and harassed, a form of torture which haunts them long after their release. 

It's estimated there are 4,000 female prisoners in Syria and it's suspected most of them have been unjustly detained.

Many are abandoned by their families because of the shame and stigma associated with their abuse.
