Saudi Arabia on Tuesday strongly condemned a drone attack targeting the office of Masrour Barzani, prime minister of Iraq’s Kurdish Regional Government (KRG), a day earlier, describing it as a “blatant violation” of Iraq’s sovereignty.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry reaffirmed the Kingdom’s rejection of “hostile operations targeting political figures and other actions that could undermine Iraqi state institutions or destabilise the country’s security and stability.”
It also reiterated its opposition to interference in countries’ internal affairs, violations of their sovereignty and actions contrary to the principles of good neighbourliness and international law.
Iran denied involvement and condemned the attack.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Monday there was no justification for the attack, and suggested it was staged to drive a wedge between Tehran and the Kurdish region.
“Nothing justifies the reckless attack on PM Barzani’s office. Kurdish friends should be vigilant against false-flag ploys to sow discord between neighbours,” he said in a post on X.
The drone attack targeted Barzani’s private office and also the residence of the Security Directorate in northern Iraq, prompting Baghdad to seek an official clarification from Tehran over the incident.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein condemned the attack as “unjustified” and “dangerous escalation” and has ordered an investigation.
