A Russian military Tu-95 aircraft crashed during a training flight in the Far Eastern Amur region on Tuesday, killing six crew members and injuring another, Russia’s defence ministry said.

The aircraft went down in an uninhabited area and was not carrying ammunition, the ministry said, according to state news agency TASS.

“According to preliminary data, six crew members died, while one was injured and evacuated to a medical facility,” it said.

Unverified videos posted on social media appeared to show flames and smoke rising from the crash site, with booming and crackling sounds audible in the background.

The Tu-95 is a large, nuclear-capable bomber aircraft designed in the Soviet Union. Russia regularly uses the aircraft in military exercises.
