The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Ebola outbreak has killed more than 3,000 people out of more than 6,100 confirmed cases, according to the latest government data released on Wednesday, as the disease continues to spread rapidly.
Data from the DRC’s Ministry of Health showed that 6,186 confirmed cases and 3,007 deaths had been recorded since the outbreak was declared on May 15.
The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo variant of Ebola, is the fastest-growing outbreak of the disease on record, according to the government data.
There are currently no approved vaccines or treatments for the Bundibugyo strain.
The outbreak has intensified since it was first declared, while weak health infrastructure, community resistance, instability and protests by response workers have hampered efforts to identify and contain cases.
