Iran has described the US response to its seven conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz as “insufficient”, saying Washington must clarify its position on unresolved issues.

Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said on Sunday that the US had accepted some conditions but remained unclear on others, according to state media.

“We presented seven conditions to the Americans and clearly stated that the Strait of Hormuz would not be opened to them, and no negotiations would take place until these conditions are met,” he said.

Iran presented the proposal during the UN General Assembly, offering to reopen the strategic waterway and restore normal maritime passage within seven days if its conditions were met. Washington later responded through Qatari intermediaries.

Rezaei said Iran was “no longer in the process of responding to the Americans” and that Washington needed to clarify the issues still unclear to Tehran.

"In their response, they have accepted some of our conditions, while others remain unclear," he said.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tehran said in late September that it had received a US response to its latest proposal to revive the collapsed ceasefire in the Gulf, days after US President Donald Trump said he had rejected it.

Qatar and other mediators have exchanged messages between Washington and Tehran in efforts to end the conflict and reopen the strait.

Before the war began in late February with US and Israeli attacks on Iran, the waterway carried a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas.
