North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has ordered a defence build-up along the country's southern border during a meeting with top army commanders.

Kim convened a meeting on Sunday with division and brigade commanders from across the military to discuss key military and political tasks, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

He has stressed the importance of reinforcing frontline units guarding the southern border and turning the area into an "impregnable fortress."

Kim also has emphasised the need to modernise military structures and strengthen units "militarily and technically" to enhance war deterrence.

He added that the army's "strategic action" would be "renewed" and that "a great change" would be made in these efforts.

Kim has called for reorganising the military’s training system and expanding practical combat drills in line with modern technology.

He urged commanders to heighten awareness of North Korea's "principal enemy" and "arch enemy," in an apparent reference to South Korea.

The meeting included Ri Yong-gil, chief of the General Staff, and Pak Jong-chon, an adviser to the Ministry of National Defence.

The remarks have come as a North Korean women's football team arrived in the South on Sunday, marking the first visit by a sports team in nearly eight years for the Asian Champions League semi-finals.

Despite this, inter-Korean relations have remained at a low point, with Pyongyang remaining unresponsive to Seoul's repeated offers for dialogue.
