Yemen’s internationally recognised government has strongly condemned Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi cities, expressing its “full solidarity” with the kingdom.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Yemeni foreign ministry said the attacks targeted civilian areas in Khamis Mushait, Abha and Taif on Monday, leaving 13 civilians injured and damaging homes and vehicles.
The ministry called the attacks a “blatant violation” of Saudi sovereignty and a threat to its security and stability, accusing the Houthis of deliberately targeting civilians and seeking to widen the regional escalation.
It reaffirmed Yemen’s support for Saudi Arabia and its right to take necessary measures to protect its citizens, residents, territory and facilities in accordance with international law.
The ministry also stressed its rejection of the use of Yemeni territory as a launching point for attacks on neighbouring countries and called on the international community to take a firm stance against Houthi attacks, curb the group’s sources of funding and weapons, and support the Yemeni government in restoring state institutions.
The Saudi-led coalition said earlier Tuesday that 13 civilians suffered minor to moderate injuries in Houthi ballistic missile and drone attacks on Khamis Mushait, Abha and Taif in the country’s southwest on Monday. Seven homes and two vehicles were also damaged.
The latest attacks come amid a sharp escalation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. On Monday, the group claimed a large-scale attack using dozens of ballistic missiles and drones against King Khalid Air Base in Khamis Mushait, accusing Saudi Arabia of carrying out hundreds of airstrikes in Yemen in recent days.
