US President Donald Trump has confirmed that a shooter has been apprehended following a major security breach at the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

An FBI official reported that a person armed with a shotgun attempted to breach security at the gala, firing at a Secret Service agent.

The official confirmed the agent is "fine" and sustained no injuries during the exchange.

The President was rushed from the venue after the shotgun blast and a series of loud bangs interrupted the annual gathering of journalists and officials.

Other administration members also evacuated as many of the 2,600 attendees took cover under tables while staff fled the hall.

Shortly after being moved to safety, Trump took to Truth Social to praise the response of federal agents.

"Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended," Trump said.

He also confirmed that the First Lady, the Vice President, and attending Cabinet members are all in "perfect condition."

While the President recommended that organisers "LET THE SHOW GO ON," he noted that the final decision remains with law enforcement.

"Regardless of that decision, the evening will be much different than planned, and we'll just, plain, have to do it again," he added.

The FBI and Secret Service continued their investigation into the suspect's motives and how the armed individual reached the secure perimeter of the Washington Hilton.
