Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has spoken by phone with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, according to Turkish foreign ministry sources.

The two discussed the latest developments in negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and maintain the ceasefire, the sources said on Monday.

The call focused on the current status of the talks on both issues, according to the sources.

The Strait of Hormuz has seen escalating tensions amid the US-Iran war, raising fears of disruptions to shipping and global energy supplies despite diplomatic efforts to reach understandings on freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway.

The US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28, with Tehran launching retaliatory strikes targeting countries hosting US military assets across the region.

Tehran and Washington agreed to a ceasefire in April and subsequently signed a memorandum of understanding in June aimed at ending their military conflict and reaching a lasting peace agreement.

The deal, however, collapsed last month, with Iran and the US exchanging attacks for nearly two weeks before US President Donald Trump abruptly halted the bombardment amid efforts to revive the agreement.
