A fire broke out in an apartment building on Avenue Louise in Brussels, Belgium, prompting firefighters to search the building for possible victims, authorities have said.

The Brussels Fire Department was alerted to the blaze at around 5.35 am local time (0335GMT) on Wednesday, according to spokesperson Walter Derieuw, cited by broadcaster VRT.

The fire has since been extinguished, but it remains unclear whether there were any casualties.

"At this moment, we are still searching the building for possible victims," Derieuw said.

Part of Avenue Louise was closed due to the incident, causing disruptions to public transport.

Authorities have not yet provided further details on the cause of the fire or possible casualties.
