France's formations, key players

France have looked every inch a title contender so far, defeating Senegal 3-1 before dispatching Iraq 3-0, combining attacking quality with defensive discipline.

In their first two games, Les Blues played a 4-2-3-1 formation. The system is built around allowing star forwards more freedom in the final third.

The key feature of France's play is their ability to attack at speed. Rather than endlessly circulating the ball, they often absorb pressure, win possession, and break forward in seconds. The midfield double pivot provides defensive stability while allowing the front four to attack aggressively.

When opponents commit numbers forward, France become particularly dangerous because they can exploit open spaces with direct runs and vertical passing.

Much of the attacking threat revolves around Mbappe. Whether starting on the left wing or drifting centrally, Mbappe is given freedom to attack defenders one-on-one and make runs behind the back line. France frequently look to release him early with quick passes after regaining possession.

Another key player is Michael Olise, who shares the top spot of top assist providers so far with three assists.

Norway's formations, key players

The Vikings' standard formation are either 4-3-3 or 4-4-2. But in their first two matches in the World Cup, they utilised the 4-3-3 formation.

This formation can sometimes shift into a 4-5-1 when out of possession, and can occasionally resemble the famous 4-2-3-1 when attacking.

The cornerstone of Norway's attack is the partnership between Haaland and Martin Odegaard.

Odegaard acts as the creative hub, dropping into midfield to dictate play and pick out forward passes, while Haaland focuses on stretching defences with powerful runs behind the back line.

Much of Norway's attacking play revolves around quickly getting the ball to Odegaard and other playmakers, allowing them to find Haaland in dangerous areas.

Another tool Norway often utilise is long crosses from both flanks.

Their wingers frequently cut inside, creating space for overlapping full-backs, while crosses into the penalty area remain an important weapon given Haaland's aerial ability and physical presence.

Norway also utilise high pressure, especially on defenders, in order to exploit any defensive lapses.

With both nations among Europe's strongest sides and packed with attacking talent, the clash has all the ingredients of a heavyweight contest that could serve as a preview of a much later stage of the tournament.
