The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen has blamed the Houthis for a drone attack earlier this week on an electricity distribution station in the Saudi city of Medina.

Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki said on Thursday that the attack targeted the Taibah electricity distribution station on Tuesday.

An operational review and examination of debris from the drone established Houthi involvement in planning and carrying out a "cowardly terrorist act", Al-Maliki said

The attack knocked one transformer out of service but did not affect the electricity grid, he added.

Al-Maliki said the facility provides electricity to the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, one of Islam's holiest sites.

He accused the Houthis of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure and attempting to provoke Muslims by targeting the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

Al-Maliki said the coalition would continue taking measures to deter Houthi attacks and protect the two holy mosques and visitors to Mecca and Medina.

The Houthis, however, denied involvement in the attack.

The latest statement came amid a series of missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia attributed to the Houthis.

On September 16, Saudi Arabia said its air defences intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone south of Mecca before it entered the holy city’s restricted airspace.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for other recent attacks in the kingdom, including strikes targeting Saudi Aramco facilities and military sites.

Confrontations between Yemen's internationally recognised government forces and the Houthis have escalated since early July following years of relative calm.

The country has been engulfed in war since the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and several provinces in 2014, before a Saudi-led Arab coalition intervened in 2015 in support of the internationally recognised government.

The Houthis have been engaged in renewed fighting with government forces since Yemen's civil war reignited in July, when the group declared a maritime blockade on Riyadh and began targeting its ships in the Red Sea.

The group seized control of Yemen's Red Sea coast and the Bab al Mandab Strait last month, which has become vital as the wider US war with Iran chokes the Strait of Hormuz.
