Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kiev's drone attack on Russia on Sunday was "entirely justified" after a barrage on the Moscow region killed four people, in what Ukraine calls retaliation for Moscow's own strikes.

"Our responses to Russia's prolongation of the war and its attacks on our cities and communities are entirely justified. This time, Ukrainian long-range sanctions reached the Moscow region, and we are clearly telling the Russians: their state must end its war," Zelenskyy said on social media.

Drone strikes killed four people in the Moscow region, its governor said on Sunday, in a "large-scale" attack on the area around Russia's capital.

Indian citizen killed

An Indian citizen working in Russia was among the three people killed in a massive Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow.

"One Indian worker has lost his life, and three others have been wounded in a drone attack in the Moscow region earlier today," the embassy said in a statement.

Embassy officials have visited the site of the attack and met the injured workers in the hospital, the statement added.

A wave of almost 600 Ukrainian drones attacked Russia overnight.

Large-scale UAV attack

"A woman was killed as a result of a UAV hitting a private house. One more person is trapped under rubble," Governor Andrey Vorobyov posted on Telegram, adding the early morning attack also claimed the lives of two men.

"Since 3 o'clock in the morning, air defence forces have been repelling a large-scale UAV attack on the capital region," he said, adding four people were wounded and infrastructure facilities had been targeted.

In the capital city itself, authorities reported air defence systems had intercepted at least 74 drones overnight, wounding 12 people.

"Minor damage has been recorded at the sites where debris fell," Mayor Sergei Sobyanin posted on Telegram.

A total of 120 drones were intercepted in the past 24 hours, he said.

Daily bombardments

Moscow and Kiev have resumed attacks following a prisoner swap and the expiration of a three-day truce on Tuesday.

Authorities did not specify the origin of the drones, but Ukraine, in response to daily bombardments by the Russian military for more than four years, regularly strikes within Russia, saying it targets both military and energy sites.

While the capital region is often subjected to drone attacks, the city of Moscow is less frequently targeted.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed on Friday to launch more retaliatory strikes a day after a Russian attack on Kiev killed 24 people.
