Nearly 16,000 people were displaced in Yemen in one week as fighting intensified along the country’s western coast and south, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

As of September 28, nearly 150,000 people had been displaced across eight governorates since fighting between government forces and Houthis escalated in June, a 12% increase in one week.

Taiz accounts for more than half of the total, with 81,444 people displaced from the city. According to UNHCR, the vast majority of those displaced are women, children and older people, and many have already been forced to flee several times.

The UN migration agency warned that further displacement was likely as insecurity persists, while UNHCR said growing numbers could flee both within Yemen and across the Bab al Mandeb to Djibouti, Somalia, and other countries.

The latest displacement comes as Yemen faces an already dire humanitarian crisis, with more than 5.2 million people internally displaced even before the latest escalation, and more than 22 million people in need of humanitarian assistance.
