More than 104,000 people have been displaced inside Yemen as fighting along the country’s West Coast continues, the UN migration agency said on Wednesday.
A total of 104,796 people from 17,461 households have been displaced, according to the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) latest Displacement Tracking Matrix.
Taiz remains the epicentre of displacement, with more than 63,000 people displaced across its districts, including 21,018 in Jabal Habashi, 12,642 in Al Ma'afer and 8,250 in Ash Shamayatayn.
Nearly 26,400 people have been displaced in Lahj, while Aden has recorded more than 3,500, the IOM said.
Displacement is also rising in Al Abyan, Hadramawt and Ma'rib as fighting spreads, according to the agency.
“Yemen is a country torn by war, displacement, poverty, and climate impacts,” IOM Director General Amy Pope said in a statement.
“Overlooking the suffering of civilians is not acceptable as needs continue to rise,” Pope added.
The agency said families were moving under fire, often at night and with few belongings, while the pace of displacement was outstripping aid workers’ ability to track movements in real time.
The IOM also said 2,776 people had crossed from Yemen into Djibouti, where the agency is providing emergency assistance.
