At least seven people have been killed and around 10 others wounded in a shooting inside a church in southern Jordan.

Two unidentified gunmen opened fire inside Hammoud Church in Karak governorate on Friday, a security source told state broadcaster Al-Mamlaka, adding that some of the wounded were in critical condition.

Jordan’s Public Security Directorate confirmed that several people had been killed or wounded, according to the state-run Petra news agency.

“Authorities are pursuing the suspects,” Petra reported.

An eyewitness told Al-Mamlaka that the gunmen arrived in a vehicle and fired continuously for five minutes before fleeing.

Between 150 and 200 people were inside and around the church at the time, the witness said, adding that most of the victims were aged between 50 and 70.

Government Communications Minister Mohammed Al-Momani said security forces were investigating and that verified information would be shared with the public as details became available.

Karak is home to a significant Christian community in the kingdom.
