Russia marks the 100th anniversary of the communist revolution
The armed uprising began on October 25, 1917 – which according to the modern-day Gregorian calendar is November 7 – after a shot was fired at the Winter Palace by the Aurora cruiser ship.

It is 100 years since Vladimir Lenin’s Bolsheviks stormed the Winter Palace in what is now St Petersburg and took power.

It changed world history but cost tens of millions of lives. Forced labour camps known as Gulags sprang up in Soviet times to house millions of political prisoners.
