Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan has discussed escalating regional security developments and ongoing diplomatic efforts to contain the crisis with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, the Saudi Foreign Ministry announced.

The talks took place during a telephone call initiated by Araghchi, the ministry confirmed in a statement published on the X platform.

According to the ministry, the two foreign ministers reviewed "the recent escalation in the region and the efforts being made to address it", though officials provided no further details regarding specific diplomatic proposals or agreed measures.

The high-level exchange comes against a backdrop of intensifying regional military confrontation, marked by repeated cross-border strikes against Saudi civilian infrastructure and severe disruptions to international navigation across the Strait of Hormuz.

Maritime tensions

On Saturday, a fatal strike targeting King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital Riyadh killed 13 people and injured hundreds of others.

Yemeni government forces on Sunday blamed Houthi militia for the airport attack and vowed a decisive military response.

Simultaneously, commercial transit through the Strait of Hormuz continues to face disruption following navigation restrictions imposed by Tehran in April 2026, which followed the outbreak of war between the United States, Israel, and Iran in February that year.
