US President Donald Trump has thrown his “complete and total” support behind Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of Israel’s parliamentary elections on 27 October, prompting a public expression of gratitude from the Israeli leader.

“Thank you, President Trump, for your tremendous support and for our work together. Together we will complete the mission!” Netanyahu wrote on X on Sunday, following the publication of a letter in which Trump endorsed his re-election bid.

Trump issued the endorsement on his Truth Social platform, declaring: “BIBI NETANYAHU WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”

Trump issues emphatic election endorsement

In his letter on Sunday, Trump described his support for Netanyahu as “Complete and Total”, explicitly backing him in the race to remain prime minister.

The public intervention highlights the close political relationship between the two leaders as Netanyahu seeks another term in office.

Trump’s statement did not detail specific policy commitments linked to the endorsement.

ICC arrest warrant over Gaza war

Netanyahu’s election campaign comes amid international legal scrutiny over Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024, finding reasonable grounds to believe he bore criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare and crimes against humanity including murder, persecution and other inhumane acts.

Trump’s endorsement places his support for Netanyahu in the spotlight as the Israeli leader faces both a domestic electoral contest and continuing international scrutiny over the conduct of the war.
