US President Donald Trump has shared a video appearing to show the word “Mexico” crossed out in the name of the US state of New Mexico and replaced with “America”.
Trump did not provide an explanation for the post on his Truth Social platform, leaving it unclear whether the video was rhetorical or reflected any plans by his administration to rename the state.
The post follows Trump’s previous efforts to rename geographical landmarks. On January 20, 2025, he signed an executive order directing the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, a move opposed by Mexico.
On August 27, he signed another order renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America” amid escalating trade tensions with Canada.
New Mexico became a US territory in the mid-19th century following the Mexican-American War. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 formally ceded the region, along with California, to the United States.
Local officials in New Mexico did not immediately respond to the post. The White House also did not immediately respond to Anadolu’s request for comment.
