Why did the United States go to war with Iran — and what were the real objectives?

On this episode of Bigger Than Five, former CENTCOM commander and CIA director David Petraeus rejects the idea that Washington is fighting Israel’s war, insisting “this is absolutely all our war”.

He admits “it was very clear that Israel was going to attack Iran”, but dismisses claims by Omani mediator Badr al-Busaidi that nuclear talks were making significant progress, saying that view “was not shared” by the US.

Pressed on if the strikes could lead to “an endless war”, if Tehran rebuilds its military capabilities and Washington and Tel Aviv continue their attacks, the retired General says “it could well be”.
