The Perverted Olympics
The Paris Olympics is causing widespread outrage on a number of fronts. Steven van de Velde, a convicted child rapist has been allowed to compete for The Netherlands in beach volleyball, and the opening ceremony’s mockery of Christ’s ‘Last Supper’ using drag queens and scantily clad dancers has led to accusations of blasphemy. On Nexus this week: Child abuse campaigners Emma-Jane Taylor and runner Mhairi Maclennan explain why they are angry that van de Velde has been picked for Paris. Dutch lawyer Peter Schouten, French lawyer Eric Moutet and US attorney Vinoo Varghese reveal how different countries view convicted sex offenders when it comes to allowing them to take part in events like the Olympics. And finally, Anglican ministers Yemi Adedji and Ian Paul explain how they felt watching the opening ceremony’s depiction of religion.
