Top South Korean and Venezuelan diplomats on Wednesday discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation and recovery efforts following a pair of powerful earthquakes that hit the South American country in June, Seoul's Foreign Ministry said.
Cho Hyun, in a telephone call to his Venezuelan counterpart, Felix Plasencia, expressed condolences to the victims of recent earthquakes in Venezuela and pledged to support the country's recovery efforts, Seoul-based Yonhap News reported.
The earthquakes killed more than 6,000 people.
The two ministers also discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including the economy, and agreed to activate communication channels to deepen future discussions.
Cho urged the Venezuelan government to help ensure the safety of South Korean nationals living in the country.
In a related development, South Korea announced that it will provide $1 million in humanitarian aid to Colombia to help the country recover from a recent deadly earthquake.
"We hope this aid will help the country's recovery efforts and ensure a swift return to normalcy for its people," the Foreign Ministry said.
The donation will be delivered through an international organisation operating in the South American nation.
Colombia was hit by a magnitude 7.4 earthquake on Monday that has killed more than 200 people.
