Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran on Monday, focusing on bilateral cooperation and regional developments.

Pezeshkian stressed the need to accelerate the implementation of existing agreements, identifying energy, transport and trade as priorities, according to the Iranian presidency.

He said his upcoming visit to Moscow could help advance bilateral agreements and deliver tangible results, particularly in energy, transport and infrastructure.

Pezeshkian also criticised the US-Israeli war on Iran, saying attacks on Iranian infrastructure and the killing of senior officials, scientists and schoolchildren violated international norms. He thanked Russia for its support during the conflict.

He called for a regional security framework based on mutual respect, dialogue and cooperation, arguing that US military bases in the region heightened tensions and instability.

Expanding Tehran-Moscow cooperation

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Lavrov’s visit continued political dialogue between the two countries and helped identify practical steps to advance bilateral relations and foreign policy cooperation.

During the visit, Lavrov also met Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi and Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the ministry said.

Lavrov reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to help resolve the situation surrounding Iran and briefed Iranian officials on his talks on Sunday in Bahrain with representatives of countries on the Arabian Peninsula.

The two sides stressed the need for close coordination on developments in the Middle East, the Gulf, the South Caucasus and the Caspian Sea, according to the ministry.

They also discussed expanding political, economic and investment ties, including joint transport, logistics and energy projects.

Cooperation would continue through government agencies, parliaments, regional authorities and businesses, the ministry added.
