Romania scrambled two F-16 fighter jets and deployed a military helicopter after three drones were detected near the country’s border with Ukraine, the Defence Ministry said on Wednesday.
The drones were identified near the Ukrainian city of Vylkove, close to the Romanian border and the Danube Delta.
Romanian authorities issued an RO-Alert warning to residents in the northern part of Tulcea County over the possibility that objects could fall from the air.
Two Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jets took off to monitor the situation, while a military helicopter was also deployed to conduct surveillance in the border area.
The ministry said radar data showed that the drones remained in Ukrainian airspace and did not cross into Romania.
The public warning was subsequently lifted after authorities determined that there was no immediate threat to Romanian territory.
Romania, a NATO and EU member, shares a border with Ukraine along the Danube and has repeatedly scrambled military aircraft in response to drone activity near its territory.
Drone fragments have previously been discovered in Romanian border areas following Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports and infrastructure along the Danube.
Bucharest has strengthened air surveillance and defensive measures in the region amid concerns that the conflict could spill across NATO borders.
