Britain will deploy Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon fighter jets on defensive missions to help protect Saudi Arabia from escalating attacks by the Houthi militia, the UK government says.
The jets will carry out defensive counter-air missions to protect Saudi cities and critical infrastructure from aerial attacks, the UK Defence Ministry said on Tuesday.
Britain will also provide an Atlas A400M transport aircraft and military advisers, Bloomberg reported, citing British officials familiar with the matter.
In September, Britain announced additional defensive military assistance to Saudi Arabia following renewed Houthi attacks, including an RAF Voyager air-to-air refuelling aircraft. The announcement did not include fighter jet support.
Houthi militia attacks have intensified in recent weeks.
Yemeni authorities said on Tuesday that a strike on a government security forces training camp on Monday had killed 60 people, making it the deadliest strike since fighting in the country began escalating three months ago.
