Yemeni pro-government forces recaptured the Red Sea port city of Mokha in southwestern Yemen from the Houthi group on Monday following fierce fighting, Yemen’s state news agency SABA reported.

The Nation’s Shield Forces, Giants Brigades and Tihama Resistance, backed by the Popular Resistance, regained control of the city with air support, a military source told SABA.

The Houthis had controlled Mokha since early September, according to the source.

Fierce clashes reported around the city

The fighting took place at several positions surrounding Mokha and involved various types of weapons, the source said.

Houthi members were killed and wounded in the clashes, while several others were captured, according to the military source. Others reportedly fled the area.

The source did not provide figures for casualties or the number of members captured.

Mokha, located on Yemen’s western coast along the Red Sea, is strategically important because of its position near one of the world’s key maritime routes.
