Spain beat favourites France 2-0 on Tuesday to reach the World Cup final thanks to a penalty from Mikel Oyarzabal and a goal from Pedro Porro.

The European champions will face the winner of Wednesday's semi-final between England and Argentina in the final as they try to win the World Cup for a second time.

Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute after Lucas Digne fouled Lamine Yamal in the box.

Spain took command through their positional play after an even start, limiting France's chances and controlling the tempo.

Pedro Porro doubled the lead in the 58th minute after a one-two with Dani Olmo sent him through to finish past Mike Maignan.

Spain have conceded just once in the entire tournament, combining defensive steel with the trickery of winger Lamine Yamal in attack.

Spain, World Cup winners in 2010, will seek their second title against England or Argentina at New York/New Jersey Stadium on Sunday.

Third-placed team

France took 14 shots, four of them on target, but all of their attempts were futile.

A win would have taken France to their third consecutive World Cup final.

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe was just one cog in a star-studded attack that also included Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele and the elegant Michael Olise.

Defeat leaves just the third-place play-off for France coach Didier Deschamps, who is stepping down after the tournament following 14 years in charge.

The 2018 and 1998 world champions will face the loser of the match between Argentina and England to decide who will win third place.
