Mining in Serbia’s Bor contributes economy but poses risks to health and nature

Eight years after the Chinese mining giant Zijin Mining Group arrived in Bor, eastern Serbia, companies within the group have become some of the country’s biggest exporters. The investment has brought new jobs and higher living standards to this mining town. But as production expands and exploration spreads into nearby areas, concerns about air pollution persist, and some residents living near the open pits are still awaiting relocation.
