Russian missile and drone strikes on Ukraine's capital and surrounding region have killed at least two people and wounded dozens more, authorities said, after fresh overnight attacks.
A 20-storey apartment building in Ukraine's capital, Kiev, caught fire after a Russian air attack, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said, as explosions rang out across the city after midnight local time.
Russian forces launched waves of ballistic missiles, officials said.
Kiev's military administration reported one woman killed and at least seven injured as fires broke out across four districts.
Another person was killed in Bucha district west of Kiev, while 21 others were injured across the surrounding region.
Ukrainian Air Force said missiles had been deployed from at least two different directions on the city.
Calls for air defence support
Ukraine has in recent months urged its allies for more supplies of US-made Patriot missile interceptors to protect its airspace against Russian ballistic attacks.
Both sides have increased their long-range attacks on the other in recent weeks, with Russia more than doubling its use of missiles in July.
Concurrently, Ukrainian drone strikes hit two industrial facilities and a Wildberries warehouse in Russia's Tula region.
UN human rights monitors have voiced concern about rising numbers of civilian casualties, which have reached their highest levels since the war started in February 2022.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said a lack of ballistic missile interceptors "only encourages Russia to launch such attacks that take human lives".
He met his US counterpart, Donald Trump, last Tuesday to seek licences to produce Patriot missile systems domestically.
