A 20-storey apartment building in Ukraine's capital Kiev has caught fire after a Russian air attack, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said, as explosions rang out across the city after midnight local time.
Russian forces attacked with waves of ballistic missiles, officials said.
The city's military administration, writing on Telegram, said warehouse buildings had been set ablaze in two districts.
"The danger remains high," the administration's post said.
Klitschko said on Telegram that emergency crews had been dispatched to the scene of one strike in a northern suburb, adding that air defence units were in action to repel the assault.
The Ukrainian Air Force said missiles had been deployed from at least two different directions on the city.
Calls for air defence support
Ukraine has in recent months urged its allies for more supplies of US-made Patriot missile interceptors to protect its airspace against Russian ballistic attacks.
Both sides have increased their long-range attacks on the other in recent weeks, with Russia more than doubling its use of missiles in July.
UN human rights monitors have voiced concern about rising numbers of civilian casualties, which have reached their highest levels since the war started in February 2022.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said a lack of ballistic missile interceptors "only encourages Russia to launch such attacks that take human lives".
He met his US counterpart, Donald Trump, last Tuesday to seek licences to produce Patriot missile systems domestically.
